What is a Cajon
A cajon is normally a rectangular Wooden box-shaped drum or percussion instrument that originated in Peru. It is played by slapping the front panel with the hands or fingers to produce a bass and snare-like sounds, similar to sounds from an acoustic drum kit. The player who sits on top of the “box” can strike different areas of the Tapa (front panel) thus getting varied tones going from deep bass when striking the centre with the palm of the hands to sharp slaps using the fingers on the edge. With snares attached inside the box it can create a buzzing sound, popular with flamenco, jazz, pop, and world music styles of music
This circular travel cajon although shaped differently but carries the same ideas, except it is not to be sat on! It is a Lap Cajon but you can still get many of the sounds from its warm Mahogany body, that you would from its big brothers but with the great convenience od a travel friendly size
How to create different key sounds
A flat palm strike in the centre of the front panel creates a deep, resonant bass sound, amplified by the box’s hollow chamber.
Striking the upper edges or corners with fingers produces a sharp, crisp “slap” sound which has an extra effect due to the snare wires inside.
Striking near the edges or with different hand pressure creates a range of various muted or high.
