The mazurka is a traditional dance from Mazoria, an old Kingdom of Poland where Frédéric Chopin was born. Either slow or fast, the dance was generally performed by a large company in the manner of a village or folk dance. Chopin made great use of the folk music of this region, and his mazurkas demonstrate his extraordinary compositional ability. Ranging from brief and vigorous dances to deep and complex extended works, they each have a unique character.
